Both essays should receive a score around 6 or 7. They are effective essays yet summarize the works that are trying to be analyzed. The vocabulary allows the reader to understand the author's initial thoughts yet do not allow for a deeper penetration into more complex descriptions.
I agree with Ryland, both essays deserve a score around 6 or 7. The essays seemed to have been rushed and did not express complete understanding of the prompt but, the diction is understandable.
I would give both essays a 5, although Essay 1 is slightly stronger. Essay 2 in particular relies heavily on summarizing. Both essays have a very mechanical flow. It seems more like the writing is a list, rather than a discussion or explanation. That said, it was evidently written quickly (as would the real AP exam) and the premise of the each prompt is addressed in both essays to an extent.
